It is important for an artist to open your heart and heal all your wounds with every touch of his art, only to make you feel and fall for everything in this world. And Sampooran Singh Kalra, popularly known as Gulzar Sahab has never failed at it. He is the definition of an artist. He is a walking poetry. Poetry just flows out of him so naturally and so wonderfully that you can’t help but just dwell into it.
The famous Poet, Lyricist and Film Director; Gulzar sahab is the heartbeat of Indian cinema, his work in movies like Aandhi and Masum not only won hearts but made the audience cry and smile at the same time.
Sampooran Singh Kalra, born on 18th August, 1934 in Dina, Punjab (now in Pakistan) came to India after partition to only discover a new and successful life.
He debuted as a lyricist for the film Bandini (1963), Film Director for Mere Apne (1971) and Tv Director for Mirza Ghalib (1988).
His pen name was Gulzar Deenvi which later changed into simply Gulzar. He writes in Urdu and Punjabi and several dialects of hindi. He came to mumbai to support his family and took up many small jobs to eke out a living, including one at a garage at Vichare Motors on Bellasis Road, Mumbai.
He married famous Bollywood actress Raakhee in 1973 when they both were at the peak of their career. He is a proud father of film director Meghna Gulzar.
He has won several National Film awards, 21 Filmfare award, one Grammy award and one Academy award. He has also been honored with Padma Bhushan (2004) and Dadasaheb Phalke award (2013). He is also associated with Eklavya foundation, an NGO based in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh working in the field of education.
He had been the best in his work and currently working as lyricist. His poems has bloomed flowers of love.
