Shreya Ghoshal, who made her singing debut in 2002 in the movie Devdas had seeds of singing planted in her since age four. Born on 12th March, 1984 in a traditional Bengali household in Murshidabad district in West Bengal, Ghoshal had started learning classical music at a very young age.
Coming from a family which valued education, Ghoshal started her schooling in Atomic Energy Central School, Rawatbhata. She studied here till eighth grade, when in 1997 her father was transferred to Mumbai. Here she joined Atomic Energy Central School, Anushakti Nagar as her father used to work at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre at the time. She joined junior college to study science, but later changed her field to English major in SIES College of Arts, Science, and Commerce in Mumbai, after dropping out.
While still in school, Ghoshal started training in Bengali music, accompanied by her mother. She won competitions like All India Light Vocal Music Competition, New Delhi in 1995 and Sa Re Ga Ma in 2000. Winning this competition, was very ceremonious for her as she was spotted by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who later offered her the chance to make her debut. From this occasion, there was no turning back.
Ghoshal has been credited of singing in more than ten languages including famous songs like, Dola Re Dola, Ghar More Pardesiya, Pinga, etc. She has won several awards and accolades and has proved that with determination and training, one can achieve even the impossible and be remembered by generations.
