Today, Narendra Modi is one of the most iconic personalities of our country. He is the 14th and current Prime Minister of our country since 2014. Fondly addressed as NaMo, he is a seasoned politician and strategist for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Before this, he had served as the Chief Minister of Gujrat from 2001 to 2014. He is the first and only Prime Minister to win two consecutive terms with complete majority share of the votes outside the Indian National Congress and the second to complete five years in office after Late PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
This great man had very humble origins. Born on 17th September 1950 in Gujrat, Modi was introduced to the RSS when he was 8 years old. He used to help his father in selling tea and later had his own tea stall as well. He became a full-time member of the RSS in 1971, and was assigned to the BJP in 1985, where he assumed several positions till 2001, rising to rank of General Secretary.
In 2001, he was appointed as the chief minister of Gujarat as Keshubhai Patel was out of people’s favor due to the poor way of handling the Bhuj earthquakes. He continued to serve as the Chief Minister of Gujarat till 2014. In 2014, he led the BJP in the general election, which gave the party a majority. This was a huge achievement as no single party had been able to achieve majority since 1984.
Since coming into power, he has led a series of revolutionary campaigns. Some of the most prominent ones are GST, demonetization of notes, CAA, Swachh Bharat, Make in India, Digital India etc. Not all of them have been successes, and he has been heavily criticized for the same. But he has been instrumental in ushering India into the digital era. His economic policies focused on privatization and liberalization of the economy. Modi has focused on liberalizing foreign investments, attracting investment in several new industries such as railways and defence.
The future will require Narendra Modi to take decisions very carefully. The country is suffering from severe economic problems, which have been amplified by the recent pandemic of the novel Corona virus. The economy needs to be rebuilt slowly while taking care of the welfare of the affected people. The decisions taken by him will have a great impact on the future of BJP as a party and the entire nation as a whole.
