Born on 28 December 1937, Ratan Tata, the former chairman of the Tata Group, is a successful businessman, industrialist and philanthropist who has been awarded the two highest civilian awards in India, the Padma Bhushan (2000) and the Padma Vibhushan (2008). Climbing the ladder of success is not a one-day process and it is evident from his inspirational journey.

Ratan Naval Tata is the great-grandson of late Jamshedji Tata, the founder of Tata Group, and was raised by his grandmother, Navajbai Tata, after his parents, Naval Tata and Sonoo, got separated. His schooling was done in Mumbai and Shimla whereas graduation was completed from Riverdale Country School along with B. Arch from Cornell University and Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School. 

Despite all the childhood struggles, Ratan Tata began his journey at the Tata Group from 1961. He started working at Tata Steel where he had to manage two entities namely, the blast furnace and the shovel limestone. Later he was given charge of Nelco and Empress Mills. In 1991, J.R.D. Tata announced his retirement from the chairmanship of the Tata Sons and announced Ratan Tata to be his successor. This was the turning point in Ratan Tata’s life and hereafter, there was no looking back. 

During his tenure, he managed to bring international recognition for Tata Group, accomplish successful mergers like Tetley with Tata Tea, Land Rover Jaguar with Tata Motors and Corus with Tata Steel. His vision helped Tata Group to grow by many folds. Realising his responsibility towards the society, he came up with Tata Nano car which was beneficial for middle-class consumers. His reign came to an end when he turned 75 but even after this, he is contributing to serve his nation in every possible way. He strongly believes in giving wealth back to the people and hence, donated on various occasions in the form of education, medicine and rural developments. Recently he contributed towards the well being of people affected by the pandemic.
