Self-taught designer Gaurang Shah among the few designers working on reviving the traditional Indian handloom. Back in 2001, when the traditional Handlooms were dying over the popular choice of georgettes and chiffons sarees and the weavers were drowned in debt, Gaurang decided to bring a change.
Gaurang’s designs offer traditional Indian weaves and hand embroidery styles like parsi, kashmiri, chikankari and others on handloom sarees with a contemporary touch remarking a fusion of traditional craftsmanship and style.
After travelling across the country in search of fine fabric, Gaurang spoke to the weavers and made them believe that his designs will bring a change. The weavers agreed and decided to work with him. After working hard for two years, handloom finally started to regain its popularity.
Gaurang’s exquisite handcrafted masterpieces have given a revival to the art of weaving. His designs have popularized the use of Khadi. Most if his sarees are woven in the Jamdani weaving technique. Depending on the design, this technique can take up to two years to weave.
Gaurang uses traditional motifs in his designs. These motifs are usually inspired by the sculptures of Indian temples, florals and geometrics inspired from nature. The Jamdani technique of weaving and the authentic work with pure zari results into designs personifying elegance.
In 2012, his designs were showcased at the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW). Since then, his work has been featured at seven seasons of Lakme Fashion Week. His work has also been showcased at the Berlin Fashion Week.
Gaurang’s designs have the likes of many Bollywood actors including Kirron Kher, Tapsee Pannu, Sonam Kapoor, Vidya Balan among others. Today, the flagship store of his ‘Gaurang‘ label is present in New Delhi in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai.
