Rathika Ramasamy is undoubtebly country’s best wildlife photographers. A computer engineer and later an MBA, Rathika was born and schooled in Theni in Tamil Nadu. She pursued photography as a hobby. Seeing her keen interest in photography her uncle gifted her a camera. On a family visit to a sanctuary in Bharatpur, she took some pictures of birds with it. There was no looking back after that.
A self taught photographer, Rathika is passionate about wildlife and specialises in bird photography. To make the most of her visits, she plans her trips to sanctuaries according to migratory seasons. She spends time in the sanctuaries and national parks, exploring the area. She looks for obstruction-free places with good lighting and other conditions perfect for her shot.
Rathika’s passion for wildlife can be seen in her photographs. Her photographs arent heavily edited but depict the originality of nature. She believes that a photograph is a record of a real event and that the processing should be very subtle. She does minimal post processing. This only includes basic contrast, saturation boost, color correction and sharpening. Rather than spending time post processing, she prefers spending them in the field.
Rathika also uses her photography to connect nature to people. She believes in the power of photographs and uses them to raise awareness about wildlife and its conservation. She has also contributed her pictures to non-profit organizations for them to use it increasing awaremess among people.
Hailed as the first female wildlife photographer of the country, she is member of Nikon’s Professional services (NPS). Her work has been appreciated worldwide. She has been in jury panel of many prestigious photography contests. She also conducts workshops on wildlife photography across the country.
