What is the definition of motivation?
Motivation can be explained by 3 words: desires, behavior and satisfaction. It’s willingness to achieve particular goals. People are taking up actions in favor of satisfying their biological, social, emotional needs (Maslow). According to Deci there are two types of motivation:
- intrinsic – the source lays within individual (personal satisfaction)
- extrinsic – the source lays in environment (get reward, avoid punishment)
Last research indicates that individuals’ motivation is attributed to genes. Although, for some people it’s easier to find motivation, it doesn’t mean your genetic predispositions define you. Environment also plays a big role. Motivation can be understood as a skill, which everyone can learn and find self-happiness. So no excuses!
1 JUST ... START!
Don't wait for motivation to magically come. Just start doing what you have to do and meanwhile you will start feeling motivated. How does it work? A bit of biology: dopamine is known as a "happy hormone". When you start with a task, the dopamine begins to be produced and then sends the message "reward is coming" to the brain. And it keeps you going. On the other hand, when you just fight with your thoughts to start with the new task, the brain receives less dopamine, so it’s harder to get motivated.
2 SET ACHIEVABLE GOAL
It's important to choose objective, which wouldn't be too easy or too hard. Make it specific and measurable.
3 ANSWER YOURSELF WHAT IS YOUR "WHY"
It's hard to get motivated, if you don't see the purpose of the task. Connect your "why" with emotional need. What is important for you?
4 DON'T FORGET TO SCHEDULE
Scheduling it's a great habit, which can help with procrastination. It is also rewarding, when you can uncheck tasks you have already accomplished.
