Indian fashion designer, Ritu Kumar is a pioneer of the traditional boutique-cultured fashion in India. Currently, she owns around 35 stores across the globe and runs three Labels – ‘Ritu Kumar’, ‘Ri’ and ‘LABEL Ritu Kumar.
Born in Amritsar in 1944, her family never stopped her from doing what she wanted to do. The lack of educational opportunities there led her to move to Simla for her schooling. She went to Loreto Convent and later studied at Lady Irwin College. She then went on to accept a scholarship at Briarcliff College in New York to study Art History. After coming back to India, she studied museology at the Asutosh Museum of Indian Art, under the University of Calcutta.
Early in her career, she discovered different types of dying embroideries and prints. It was then that she got the idea of taking the Indian creativity out in the world in such a way both the craftsmen and modern customer’s needs were fulfilled. She went on to study the depth of the craft and design heritage of her own country.
In 2002, Ritu Kumar joined hands with her son Amrish, and launched Ritu Kumar, ‘Label’. This was a successful attempt in drawing a thin line between traditional Indian designs and international fashion trends. These designs were targeted for the young global Indian women with a modern lifestyle.
Her designs have been worn by various national and international celebrities. These include Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, Dia Mirza along with Mischa Barton, Anoushka Shankar and Anna Ivanovic.
