The last five and a half years have been filled with ups and downs in Indian Politics. With Congress losing abysmally and BJP securing a majority in all levels of the legislature, there have been as many surprises as the criticism of BJP. This list explores the same.
1 The Make In India Policy: it took the production industry by a storm!
This policy aimed at enticing foreign investors to invest in India and use the resources present here. This policy was met with equal criticism as well as applause. Some called it the foundation in the development of the industrial sector of the Indian economy while others called it the exploitation of those who were less privileged.
2 Demonetization: The D-Day that happened on the 8th November' 16
One of the most controversial policies of the Modi-led BJP government that aimed to curb the amount of black money circulating in the economy was demonetization. Many said that it helped in the reduction of the hard cash, while others said that it led to the destruction of the economy and the exploitation of the poor.
3 Swachh Bharat Abhiyan: The policy that cleaned up the country?
The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan started in the vision of Mahatama Gandhi, an effort to clean the surroundings of the Indian citizens while providing a clean and healthy environment for survival.
4 Surgical Strike: The Actual URI
The secret attack on Pakistan that took the world by shock. It was the long-awaited and rather unexpected event in the history of conflict between India and Pakistan. Many had lauded it while others had said that it had the capacity to become a more international event than just the conflict of internal security.
5 Teen Talaq: The Bill for Women Equality, pt. 1
It allows any Muslim man to legally divorce his wife by stating the word talaq (the Arabic word for "divorce") three times in oral, written or, more recently, electronic form. The Government formulated a bill called The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 and introduced it in the Parliament; it was passed on 28 December 2017 by the Lok Sabha
The bill makes instant triple talaq in any form — spoken, in writing or by electronic means such as email, SMS and WhatsApp illegal and void, with up to three years in jail for the husband. This was met with applause as well as criticism from the religious orthodoxy.
6 RTI Amendment, 2019: The end of democracy?
The RTI Amendment Bill, 2019 allowed the legislature to control the tenure of the Chief Information Officers. This was met with strong opposition of people saying that this would be the end of democracy for India. While the Right-wing supporters hailed it as a decision which would bring more transparency into the country.
It is yet to be seen which side's prediction would be the correct one.
7 Abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35(A): Is the country still democratic?
The fast and unexpected abrogation of Article 370 and 35A, which gave Kashmir a special status, led to severe criticism along with praise.
The social media trended with #KashmirBleeds where many Millenials and Gen Zs who do not support the Modi government took this as a sign of the first step towards the erosion of democracy for capitalist purposes.
