1 Shanaya from Student of The Year
Alia's first leading role is surely what we started noticing her for, having a rather safe and typical Bollywood debut in 'Student of The Year'. She portrayed the role of Shanaya Singhania, a sophisticated teenage girl who is in a relationship with Varun Dhawan's character but is attracted to the character played by Siddharth Malhotra.
2 Veera in Highway
Her first film, ‘Student of the Year’ may have been typical Bollywood-YRF fare, but with Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Highway’ she showed us her complete rawness as she surrendered to her role as Veera, the rich Delhi girl who is kidnapped right before her wedding. Along the way, she finds comfort in travel and opens herself to new experiences while finding the courage to face terrors from her past.
3 Ananya from 2 States
Alia came off as a real surprise in Abhishek Varman’s ‘2 States’ as she shared screen space with Arjun Kapoor. She may not have aced the whole ‘South Indian’ accent to the T, but the Bhatt girl was fresh and natural as she played the role of a young professional woman who fights the odds and hostility sent her way, just to be with the man she loves.
4 Pinky in Udta Punjab
This film is one of the career-best performances by Alia. Surrounded by controversies, Udta Punjab released in 2016. In the film, Pinky played by Alia was a hockey aspirant from a small village of Bihar, who ran away from her house to join the Indian hockey team. Her journey, the traumas she faces, the repeated drug abuse and her escape from that drug mafia is beautifully portrayed by Alia. In her Bhojpuri accent, Pinky’s pain and agony connected with the audience and became one of the best performances by Alia.
5 Kaira in Dear Zindagi
Alia’s performance as Kiara in Gauri Shinde’s film is probably the most relatable of all her roles. She’s a millennial battling with life’s everyday questions and insecurities as she pursues her career in a big city. But, no matter the tough exterior, underneath it all, she’s still a little girl who went through a difficult childhood. However, it’s only with time and therapy that she rises above it all and regains her confidence.
6 Sehmat in Raazi
Meghna Gulzar directed film Raazi was one of the biggest hit of 2018. Alia Bhatt played Sehmat, who was an Indian spy working in Pakistan. Sehmat was an ordinary girl who was selected and trained for spying. Alia portrayed all the emotions of fear, love, patriotism, etc with great easy on the big screen. With no mass appeal item songs or a bodybuilder hero, Alia pulled off this film purely through her raw acting and talent. Raazi did a splendid box office collection of 207 crores.
7 Safeena in Gully Boy
Released this year, Gully Boy is one of the most successful films of 2019 till now. The film’s story is based on the lives of people living in slums, their struggles, status in the society and their viewpoint towards life. Safeena played by Alia is a fearless practitioner, who is outspoken and brave. Safeena connected with the audience because of her natural possessive emotion towards her boyfriend Murad, played by Ranveer Singh. She was pure, supportive yet protective towards Murad. The fighting sequence between Safeena and Albina was the highlight of the movie; everyone loved the natural acting by Alia. Gully Boy managed to cross 220 crores at the box office.
